Is Duct Cleaning Actually Worth It?
What the science says, when it genuinely helps, and how to avoid the scams.
Few home services generate more confusion — or more aggressive coupon mailers — than duct cleaning. The honest answer: sometimes it's genuinely valuable, and often it's not needed at all.
When it's worth booking
- After a renovation that produced drywall or sanding dust.
- Visible mold growth inside ducts or on components.
- Evidence of rodents or insects in the system.
- A home you've just bought from heavy smokers or with many pets.
When to save your money
As routine annual maintenance for a normal, filtered system — skip it. Change filters on schedule instead. And treat any '$49 whole-house special' as the upsell funnel it is; reputable local companies quote based on your actual system and walk you through findings with photos.
