The electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system, and understanding it — just at the level of what's normal and what isn't — makes you a safer homeowner and a smarter client when you do call an electrician.
What's actually in the box
The main breaker controls all power to the house. Below it, individual breakers protect circuits: 15–20 amp breakers for lights and outlets, larger double-pole breakers for heavy appliances like dryers, ranges and AC units. Modern panels add AFCI and GFCI breakers that detect dangerous arc faults and ground faults.
Why breakers trip — and what it tells you
- Once, after plugging in a space heater: simple overload. Move the load.
- Repeatedly on the same circuit: too much demand or a wiring fault — investigate.
- Instantly, the moment you reset it: possible short circuit. Stop. Call a pro.
- GFCI trips near water: the safety device doing its job. Reset once; if it repeats, call.
When it's time to upgrade — homes with fuse boxes, panels under 100 amps, or any signs of heat and corrosion — this is licensed-electrician work, permits and all. It's also one of the highest-value safety upgrades an older home can get.
