The internet will teach you to fix almost anything. Whether you should is a different question — one that comes down to water pressure, code requirements and how expensive a mistake becomes when it's inside a wall.

Green light: do it yourself

  • Dripping faucets, running toilets and slow drains.
  • Swapping showerheads, aerators and supply hoses.
  • Sealing visible joints under sinks.

Red light: call a licensed plumber

  • Anything behind a wall or under a slab.
  • Water heater repairs, gas lines and sewer odors.
  • Low pressure throughout the whole house — often a supply-side issue.
  • Any job requiring a permit; unpermitted work haunts home sales.
